Woman Is Allergic To The Weather

The itching is so incredibly intense that I will scratch myself until I bleed. And I only stop then because there is no skin left to scratch – Jen Ferguson

Jen Ferguson a mother of two from Kent, England has been diagnosed with spontaneous chronic urticaria. Chronic urticaria is an autoimmune disease when the person suffers from chronic hives, which cover their bodies.

One of Jen’s biggest triggers is the weather, specifically cold weather. When its cold she breaks out into hives, has swelling in the throat and face and her breathing suffers. Although cold weather is one of her main triggers, she also suffers from heat, wind, exercise, emotion and human touch. Since her condition is so severe she’s had to quit her job as a school teacher.

Unfortunately, so far there isn’t a cure for chronic urticaria. As a result Jen takes 16 pills a day. (which is so incredibly awful btw. No one should ever have to do this). Worse of all it prevents her from breastfeeding or getting pregnant while on them, two things she hopes for. In addition, one of the strong side effects is drowsiness.

I’ve never heard of chronic urticaria so something different. I like to learn about new skin conditions. [*Note to self I should have became a dermatologist. Although that would be weird to become a dermatologist with terrible skin. That’s like a fat personal trainer/nutritionist or a dentist with missing cavity filled teeth.]

Stories like this really get to me and I can empathize with Jen. Dealing with a chronic skin condition is tough and it strikes at a moments notice. I hope they find a cure for chronic urticaria and wish Jen the best.
