But alas, I FINALLY saw Black Panther!

Nope, this was not the 1990s…. Welcome to Black Panther 2018! Records aren’t being broken, they are being shattered. If anyone in the movie industry is reading this take notes, because the amount of people I talked to in line that were seeing this movie for the 2nd or 3rd time lets me know they DEFINITELY did something it right.

Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, cause they knew death was better than bondage. ~ Erik Killmonger [Black Panther]

I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND seeing this movie, even if you’re not a Marvel (Hello, have you met me? I’m more of a Carvel fan – BUT not after seeing this). Everything in the movie was meticulously thought out – the plot, the actors, the humor, the visuals, music, special effects, colors, African Tribes, technology, the different languages and so much more. I’m so amped on this movie, I can’t even sleep. No really, it’s 3:26am and I’m typing this.

(so you don’t think I’m making this up – my screenshot)

This movie was just on another level. For those that have no idea what this is about, google it. In the meantime, here’s the trailer…

If you do end up seeing this movie within the next few days/weeks –

  • Make sure the theater isn’t sold out…(big mistake on my part)
  • GET THERE EARLY!
  • Stay AFTER all the credits scroll, there’s a couple of surprises

Ok, now that I’ve basically fan girl out. The reason I’m typing this post is because I wanted to acknowledge skin.

Every fictional tribe in the movie was paired up with real tribe in Africa,” makeup artist Tym Buacharern adds. ~ [teen vogue]

Having An All Black Cast – Hollywood has come a long way, yet still has a long way to go. However, seeing an all Black cast in a POSITIVE (keyword here) light is simply refreshing and long overdue. This is monumental for the Black Community! Diversity Sells.

Diversity – Speaking of diversity, it was enchanting to see so many different races, cultures and ethnicities come out and support a “All Black Cast,” in a POSITIVE light for a movie set in Wakanda (A fake African Country), Africa. You’d be amazed at how many people don’t understand that Africa is continent made up at 54 countries.

Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) – Had a scar for every person he killed (spoiler alert, he’s killed a lot of people) on his chest. The special-effects makeup team including legend Joel Harlow took close to 2.5 hours everyday. They individually applied 90 silicone sculpted moulds, then blending the makeup to match his skin tone. This is called “scarification.”

Lip / Ear Plates – To honor different African tribes and cultures they incorporated characters with lip and ear plates. The Mursi and Surma tribes of Ethiopia are the most notorious for this body modification ceremonial. Although, this can be found in a few other tribes in Africa (and South America for that matter).

Singular Skin – The costume worn by the Black Panther was modernized to feel like a “singular skin.” It was sleek, modern and filled with nanotechnology for superpowers.

Ummm… I’m convinced Wakanda (yes, this make believe land) has a cure for eczema and probably everything else for that matter.
