8 Ways to Deal With That Frustrating Hand Eczema

SELF-magazine did a piece on hand eczema which I thought was great. Let me be the first to tell you as someone with hand eczema, sensitive skin is NO JOKE! From the harsh soaps, the alcohol in the hand sanitizers, to cooking and washing dishes, its a recipe for disaster!

Luckily this article is actually pretty helpful, for those that don’t know what to do about your sensitive hands…

  1. Identify the triggers – Obviously if squeezing lemons in your hands feels like acid, its best to avoid this.
  2. Rubber gloves – Anytime you’re dealing with water, protect your hands at all costs
  3. Avoid hot showers – This should be a given, but hot water strips the natural oils in your hands, causing inflammation
  4. Gentle Soap – Very important to wash your hands with mild, chemical-free soap
  5. Moisturize – Use a moisturizer after washing / drying your hands
  6. Choose the right moisturizer – You want to make sure the moisturizer is hydrating your skin, and not drying it out even further
  7. Diluted bleach bath – This may help calm your eczema <– I’m on the fence about this one
  8. NEVER rub your hands – ALWAY pat your hands dry, you don’t want to eliminate all the moisture on your hands, remember your skin isn’t normal, it’s extremely dry. So a little moisture is good.
